Monte Amiata is an extinct volcano that stands out from the surrounding hills of Southern Tuscany. The flanks of this solitary and mysterious mountain are scattered with picturesque towns (Arcidosso, Santa Fiora, Montelaterone, Seggiano, Castel del Piano, Piancastagnaio, Abbadia,..). Above these towns the mountain rises gently with a lush forest of chestnut and beech trees where wild boar and deer are often seen. This is the land of the fungaioli, those locals who have a passion for finding edible mushroms like the "porcino", considered a real delicacy. It is hard to find a restaurant that doesn't serve deliciously genuine food. The local wine, Montecucco is often a pleasant surprise for the first time traveler. The olive oil (from the Olivastra seggianese) is some of the finest to be found in Italy.
