Gion is a district of Kyoto, Japan, originally developed in the Middle Ages. Situated around Shijō Avenue between Karasuma and Kamo rivers, Gion is best known as Kyoto's most exclusive geisha district, home to the most prestigious and accomplished geishas of the city. Gion is also renowned for its many traditional restaurants and ochaya (teahouses), as well as its entertainment spots, including Kaburenjō theater, where kabuki and other performing arts shows are held. The district also features a number of traditional wooden machiya merchant houses, many of which have been converted into shops, restaurants, and cafes. Gion is also a popular tourist destination, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the traditional culture and atmosphere of old Kyoto.
