Tenryū-ji is a Zen temple located in Kyoto, Japan. It is the head temple of the Tenryū branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Founded in 1339 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji, it is one of the five great Zen temples of Kyoto. Tenryū-ji is renowned for its large and beautiful gardens, which are designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The temple's main hall, the Hojo, is also a National Treasure. Tenryū-ji is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites known as the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The temple is also home to a number of important Buddhist statues, including the wooden seated Amida Nyorai, the bronze standing Yakushi Nyorai, and the seated wooden Shaka. Other notable features of the temple include a five-story pagoda, a stone garden, and various rock and moss gardens.
