Japanese red-crowned cranes (known in Japan as tancho) are a species of large, endangered crane native to East Asia. They are among the rarest cranes in the world, with an estimated population of just 2,500 to 3,000 individuals. The birds have an unmistakable red crown and white body, long black legs, and a long, curved neck. They have a wingspan of up to 2.5 meters, and can reach heights of up to 1.5 meters. They are mostly sedentary, but will migrate to warmer areas in the winter. Red-crowned cranes are revered in Japanese culture, and are seen as symbols of good luck, strength, and fidelity. They are also said to bring longevity, and are kept as pets in some parts of the country.
